Sioux City, Iowa – MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center is excited to welcome Patrick Kenney, DO, MA, FACS as the new medical director of robotic surgery.

Dr. Kenney, a veteran with 16 years of experience in the Army, attended the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine for his medical degree and completed residency training at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. He attended USC Medical Center in LA County and Huntington Hospital in Pasadena for his general residency.

Robotic surgery comes second nature to Dr. Kenney. He has been a surgeon for 21 years. More than 10 of those have been focused on robotics.

“I’ve performed over 750 robotic cases since starting in 2012. In fact, nearly all the cases I do now are done that way. Ultimately it comes down to patient safety and the use of a robot is safer for the patient.”

MercyOne has the latest state-of-the-art robotic technology, like the da Vinci Robotic System and the Stealth navigation system, to deliver minimally invasive procedures that get you back to your best life as soon as possible. Dr. Kenney works to train other surgeons how to use the robot and is a proctor when they are first starting out in robotics or if they need help on a particular case.

“Robotic surgery has so many advantages. It’s like having miniature versions of your own hands inside a patient’s abdomen, but you’re still in control of the operation. It means smaller incisions, a quicker recovery, less post-operative pain and better outcomes. Improving patient outcomes and experience is the goal for all of us at MercyOne.”

The da Vinci Surgical System enables surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations through a few tiny incisions with increased vision, precision, dexterity and control. The Stealth navigation system is an image guided surgical system that offers the latest technology in precision neurosurgery.

Dr. Kenney is passionate about surgery including robotic, oncoplastic breast and hernia. He also performs complex abdominal wall reconstructions, gallbladder surgeries and endocrine procedures.
